Trials Spectating

To a speed fanatic, Trials competitions must seem the absolute opposite of what motor sport is all about. But watch carefully for a few minutes, and you soon appreciate the huge amount of skill involved in climbing steep hills that even a mountain goat would think twice about tackling!

The Trials format is simple; drivers attempt a series of tests, called sections, marked out with wooden stakes on a hillside. Cars tackle each section one at a time, and the further up the hill they get, the fewer points they lose. There’s a real sense of achievement when a driver gets right to the top and ‘cleans’ a section, and his efforts are always appreciated by his fellow competitors.

You soon learn that drivers have an inbuilt ability to find traction on whatever surface they are on; whether it’s mud, loose gravel or deep rutted sand. Helped by their passengers, who bounce the vehicle to create more grip, it’s a real team effort whether they are using road cars at a Car Trial or Classic Trial, or one of the highly specialised lightweight machines used in Sporting Trials.
